The coming of each season in Portland invites us to be intentional with the fresh blooms we use for our Portland flower delivery and flower pickups in store.
We source much from the Oregon Flower Growers Association, other local flower farms that we have a personal relationship with, and even our own backyard growing operation that is an urban mini-flower farm!
It pains us to use imported flowers that come from other countries and leave a carbon footprint, although in some cases, especially in wintertime, this is necessary in order to survive as our climate here in Oregon does not allow a lot of local blooms during the cold season.
At Portmanteau Flower Company, we create floral arrangements that feel good, ethical, and considered rather than expected or unsustainable—arrangements shaped by season, texture, and emotion that are simultaneously made out of an ethic of care for the earth and world. We create to mark connection and appreciation in a way that feels personal, familial, and real. And in all we do as florists, we want to reflect the PNW aesthetic and our environmental values. This begins with consciousness of what is in season locally.
Designed Locally, With Season in Mind
As a local Portland florist, we work closely with regional, Pacific Northwest growers whenever possible, prioritizing freshness, longevity, and sustainability. Because the weather has been so mild in Portland this year, the freshest, local spring blooms have been ranunculus, tulips, anemone, and flowering fruit branches. Later in the season, we’ll see a burst of vibrant, local peonies, freesia, snapdragons, lilies, and roses.
When summer arrives with its heat, our local growers burst with delphinium, gladiolus, dahlia, zinnia, calla lily, hydrangea, astilbe, sunflower, and lisianthus—among many others.

Favorite Local Flower Farms
We have a small list of our favorite flower growers nearby. These are farms and farmers whose flowers we buy and use frequently for our florist bouquets.
Lovely Harvest Farm - A brilliant urban flower farm in Cully, Charissa takes advantage of all the space she has to grow many types of blooms that we use in our arrangements. She also makes her own beautiful bouquets for sale.
Sauvie Island Farm - A capacious farm growing all kinds of berries that in recent times has shifted focus to corn, taking out what used to be large, amazing patches of U-pick zinnias and sunflowers. We still take advantage of the great selection of dahlias they grow, and a few small patches of specialty flowers.
Peterkort Roses - The name is a bit of a misnomer as she grows so much more than roses at her large farm in Hillsboro, ranging from ranunculus and anemone in early spring to lilies and of course roses in summer.
Eco-Friendly Design Habits
We do our best to make our floristry sustainable from an environmental perspective. This means doing things good for the environment such as recycling plastic wrapping from the flower market through our Ridwell service; composting cut stems and spent flowers; using as little water as possible.
Probably the most important practice of sustainability for us is refusing when at all possible to use flower foam as a mechanic for designs. Flower foam has been standard for years but it is a toxic plastic that does not biodegrade. It has advantages like holding stems very well and holding water for a longer time than other eco-friendly mechanics like agriwool and Oshun pouches. So things in foam last longer in general. There is one case where we use a new kind of foam, Oasis Renewal, which is supposedly 85% biodegradable and plant-based. This is in our installations for weddings and events when they require many blooms on things such as arches and hanging arrangements. Foam in cages is the easiest and sturdiest way to create floral beauty that can be attached to a structure. However, in general, we avoid foam.
For our arrangements, we use reusable chicken wire and flower frogs—which are sustainable. Our delivery bouquets come simply as stems in water without holding mechanics.
We are proud to play our part in being ethical and conscious in our floristry decisions so that the world in a small way can be preserved from harm.

We offer a variety of seasonal selections for flower delivery throughout Portland, in North, NW and NE Portland neighborhoods such as Alameda, Irvington, Alberta Arts District, Beaumont, Boise-Eliot, Arbor Lodge, Overlook, Kenton, University Park, Concordia, Grant Park, Mississippi District, the Pearl downtown, Northwest, Knob Hill, and, of course, the Williams District where we are located. These are the principal areas that our flower shop serves.

We recommend ordering your gift flowers for delivery early, at least a day before, especially for larger or deluxe arrangements.
